How to Become a Better Leader Using The Practice of Mindfulness
Have you ever considered mindfulness as a tool for management growth? If not, I am here to shed light on its benefits and how you can use it to become a more productive and effective manager. First, let’s cover the basics: What exactly is mindfulness? This mind-body practice refers to having full awareness of sensations, thoughts and feelings without categorizing them as good or bad.
If you find yourself stressed by the economy, unknown future and fast pace of life, for example, mindfulness will allow you to transform your relationships with anxiety and pain into certainty and comfort, encouraging you to become a much happier and healthier version of yourself. Instead of letting life pass by, mindfulness helps you live in the moment and remain open to experience.
Mindfulness in the Workplace
To become a mindful manager, it’s important to possess strong mindfulness traits or skills in the workplace, like maintaining self-confidence, seeing reality as it is and accepting change with an open mind. For example, if you’re experiencing a nerve-racking or unproductive day at your studio, refrain yourself from sadness or anger, take a deep breath and ask yourself, “What’s happening to my breathing at this moment?” Mindfulness of the breath in a slow, quiet, smooth fashion will help you become relaxed.
According to several studies, it’s been shown that a mindful manager can motivate staff members to feel less stressed and respond more quickly and appropriately to their daily challenges. Stressed employees in the workplace, however, can cause lower productivity, less cooperation and teamwork, and poor health, including high blood pressure. Yikes!
4 Ways to Be More Mindful:
1. Practice Presence
It may seem like hard work, but all that is needed to achieve mindfulness is actively paying attention to moment-to-moment awareness. Yes, it is a practice, so you must be willing to set aside time and apply the necessary steps in order to witness positive results.
2. Move with Purpose
Active mindfulness techniques like tai chi, yoga, and other meditations will help you focus on your current state and reduce your tendency to overthink. Meditation is noted as an effective tool for increasing focus, managing negative emotions, promoting deep relaxation, handling stress and establishing empathy.
3. Exhale the Past, Inhale the Present
Following my earlier statement, breathing slowly, heavily and deeply allows you to connect with yourself and greet the present. Find a quiet place, close your eyes and begin to breathe. As you are doing so, focus on the way your body feels, how your mind is reacting and then try to relax. A few seconds is all you need to increase body and mind awareness.
4. Shut it Down
Set a routine for at least 30 minutes a day to get off the grid, whether it’s shutting down the computer, turning off your phone or taking a long, peaceful walk. This will help you focus on the present moment, clear your head and decrease stress hormones like adrenaline.
Practicing mindfulness in the workplace will influence and motivate you to have better control over your emotions and behavior throughout the day. You will transform into a more productive manager with an improved ability to see life more objectively. Are you ready to do this?
